Setting up Gmail

You currently connect Gmail with an app password. Signing in with Google is temporarily unavailable: Google limits the number of users until YouniqMail has completed Google’s review, and that limit has been reached. Accounts you set up earlier by signing in with Google keep working.

Your regular Google password does not work. Google does not allow it for email programs.

  1. Two-step verification must be active in your Google account, otherwise there are no app passwords.
  2. Open the App passwords page of your Google account and create a new password, for example named “YouniqMail”.
  3. Google shows you 16 characters. Copy them.

You can reach both pages directly from the wizard via the links Turn on two-step verification and Manage app passwords.

  1. Go to Settings → Email Accounts and choose Add Email Account.
  2. Pick Gmail.
  3. Enter Your name and your Gmail address.
  4. Paste the app password into the App password field. Whether you paste it with or without spaces does not matter.
  5. Test Connection, then Continue and Finish.

If you create a new app password later, enter it under Settings → Email Accounts for the account with Change IMAP/SMTP Settings. You do not need to set up the account again for that.

YouniqMail fills these in automatically. You only need them if you set up the account by hand.

Server Port Encryption
Incoming (IMAP) imap.gmail.com 993 SSL/TLS
Outgoing (SMTP) smtp.gmail.com 465 SSL/TLS

The username is your full Gmail address in both cases.

Labels become tags. Gmail works with labels, several of which can be attached to the same email. YouniqMail does not show them as folders but as tags on the emails. The sidebar lists the inbox and the system folders such as Sent, Drafts, Spam and Trash. Tags you assign in YouniqMail become Gmail labels and are therefore visible in the Gmail web interface too. Labels you add or remove in Gmail are picked up by YouniqMail as well. A tag’s color stays in YouniqMail.

Archiving takes the email out of the inbox. Gmail has no archive folder. Archive removes the email from the inbox; in Gmail it then remains under “All Mail” with all its labels. YouniqMail does not show that folder, because it contains every email of the account. You therefore find archived emails in the Gmail web interface. If you have set an archive folder yourself under Mapping folders, YouniqMail moves emails there.

Gmail files sent mail itself. YouniqMail does not upload a copy of its own to Sent, so nothing shows up twice.

If the connection test keeps failing, one of these usually helps:

  • Two-step verification is not active. Without it there are no app passwords.
  • Regular password used. Google rejects it for email programs.
  • Work or school account. Some organizations block app passwords or access by email programs. Only the administration can change that.
