Microsoft 365 and Exchange

For Microsoft, the wizard has three tiles:

  • Microsoft 365 for work and school accounts
  • Outlook for personal accounts at Outlook.com, Hotmail and Live
  • Microsoft Exchange for self-hosted Exchange servers

Microsoft 365 and Outlook connect by signing in with Microsoft: no password ends up in YouniqMail, and two-factor sign-in works without detours.

  1. Settings → Email Accounts → Add Email Account
  2. Pick Microsoft 365 or Outlook.
  3. Enter Your name and your address.
  4. Click Sign in with Microsoft. Your default browser opens Microsoft’s sign-in page. Choose your account there, sign in and confirm the access.
  5. Back in YouniqMail: Test Connection, then Continue and Finish.

The Microsoft 365 tile only accepts work and school accounts. For a personal Microsoft account, even with a personal Microsoft 365 subscription, pick Outlook.

Microsoft files sent mail in Sent itself. YouniqMail does not upload a copy of its own, so nothing shows up twice.

For self-hosted Exchange servers there is the Microsoft Exchange tile. YouniqMail connects to the server via IMAP and SMTP. Both must be enabled on the server; there is no other way of connecting to Exchange.

  1. Enter address and password. As soon as both fields are filled in, YouniqMail looks up the server details via Autodiscover, the same mechanism Outlook uses. The Autodiscover button starts the lookup again.
  2. Check the servers and ports filled in. If Autodiscover finds nothing, you see suggestions following the pattern imap. and smtp. plus your domain, which you correct if needed.
  3. Test Connection, then Continue and Finish.

The username is always your address. Your administrator knows the right values.

The browser does not open: The sign-in happens in your default browser. Check that one is set up and try again.

Connection failed although the sign-in worked: With Microsoft 365, the organization can disable IMAP. The message then shows the server’s text. That is a server-side setting only the administrator can change.

Nothing works after a password change: The stored sign-in is then invalid. YouniqMail currently does not offer to sign in again for such accounts. Remove the account under Settings → Email Accounts with Delete Email Account and add it again. Everything on the server is kept, but in YouniqMail your tags and notes on this account’s emails are lost.
